My salt water tank stinks? Anyone help me out? i just put it in the live rock and 1 little fish. Would that of been the probleM? please hlp its STINKING UP MY ROOM!!

How does it stink? Like ammonia or something else?

When you just started then it depends on how and what liverock you purchased. Only when you bought uncured liverock or had much die-off on the cured liverock then the rotting stuff could stink. In this case, the fish shouldn't be in this tank.

I would measure ammonia and nitrite first and post the figures.

Depending on what species the fish is it might be in little or great danger. Other important figures are salinity and ph. If those are completely out of focus, then the fish won't do long either.

Sounds like dieoff on the liverock to me. Which is a waiting game. Once Ammonia and Nitrite levels drop to zero perform a large 50% waterchange and everything should be sweet.

I remember having one rock do a MASSIVE die off on me in the inital stages, and after that, the tank, water, everything smelled like rotting corpse.

It was ludricously bad die off that I had to remove the rock and get another one from the ocean (I live in Hawaii). Took it to a friend who knows and he said the rock was actually a piece of very Old coral that appeared to be rock.

Moral of the story, not saying you have a piece of sponge or rock but die off can be BAD.

So there you go.

When I started my second tank, I had rock shipped to me because I wasnt happy with what the LFS had. The smell from the curing process was almost unbearable for almost a week. It smelled like a putrid marsh. Water changes and charcoal should help with the smell.
