Hey all,
I recently got a 180 gallon to start a stingray tank (thinking probably a hystrix), I was wondering if anyone had good suggestions on filters, substrates, and plants?
Thanks,
Maggie

That tank seems a bit small for rays. I guessing its only a 6x2x2? You may be ok with 1 ray but i definitely wouldn't recommend it. Something like an 8x3x3 would be much better even for the smaller teacup rays...

Anyway you will need huge filtration like 2 fx5's and a couple of powerheads. Failing that go with a sump. As for substrate many people have bare bottom tanks for rays but sand is also good :good:

buddies got a 250, and that is alright for rays, id say yours is to crampt.. but if you must 2 fx5s, 75gallon sump, thats what my friend has and he also runs an AC110.. very nice

gal mean nothing its the footprint that matters

as for plants they will be uprooted as fast as you put them in

rocks are a risk as rays like to move things around and you stand the risk of big rocks cracking the tank

substate if you are in the UK then unipac tanna is good

if you are in the US then get lots of small samples put it in water and find one that feels soft to touch

as for tank size the footprint should be min 72 long x 30 wide even for hystrix

filteration well a sump or 2 x fx5 or ehjeim 2080s would be better with 2 x internal eheim 2252s to polish the water

rays are very easy to keep if you have the right filteration and tank size

good water = happy rays which is why an open tank with no decor is best for rays

we dont keep fish we keep water

I think T1KARMANNs word is the safest from his experience on stingrays!!

I kept the smaller teacup stingray and the female very very quickly outgrew the 6x2x2 (680L) with intense filtration. The female went from about 10cm accross her disc to 30cm accross her body/disc in about 18 months  the male was fast growing once he was eating properly but slowed down and last i had them, was just over half the size of the same aged female. As the rays turn, their tails catch on the glass and end up getting very sore.

So by the time they are 1.5-2 years old, even the smallest species of ray will be too big for any tank only 2ft front to back.

in general males stay a lot smaller than females so if you have no intention of breeding then get 2 males

teacup makes most people think they will stay small but infact teacup ray is a term given to lots of unidentifyed rays mainly they are reticulatus which still grow fairly big 14-16inch disk but with a very long tail

the smallest FW stingray is scobina with females maxing out at about 12inch dick and males about the size of 2 fag boxes but they are very hard to find i had a pair once but they are the only ones i have seen in the UK

if you want the smallest then go for hystrix marble moptoro or reticulatus males

good luck stingrays are worth all the effort if you get it right

It was reticulatus I had, couldnt remember the first part of their scientific name and couldnt spell reticulatus and cba to google it :p I assume my male was probably close to fully grown, he had stopped growing and was just bulking out. They did look hilarious together and the female often sat on him and I would panic wondering where he had gone and then looking back again he'd be sitting on her. I could watch them for hours!

Do I need more than one? are they social animals?

they do better with more than one

2 males are fine if you dont have any females in the tank or they will fight

if you want to breed its best to have 2 females 1 male as it spreads aggression

male can do bad damage to female when they are trying for the firset time

So would two males do ok in a 180? or should I stick with one and find another type of tankmate?

What are the dimensions of the tank?
