Because what ive noticed is my stingray stays burried under the sand for probably 80% of the daytime, then soon as the lights go off hes out looking for food, is this normal? I bought him as a teacup stingray, hes got a short tail so its not reticulated i think its just your smooth black river stingray... Just wondering if this is normal and what rays ARENT nocturnal if it is? (and can they go in with this ray)

thanks a bunch.

Stingrays only burry when frightened or stressed, if your ray is spending that ammount of time under the sand then i would say there is something seriously wrong with your set up. Happy healthy rays should be active 90% of the time constantly cruising the length of the tank exploring and looking for food.

Rays should never normally be kept alone, the only time when being kept singularly is recomended is with exceptionally aggressive individuals which have proved themselves untrustworthy of tankmates.

No species of ray are strictly nocturnal but you will need to choose a ray that is similar in temperment to the one you have, a more aggressive species like P.motoro or P.leopoldi could bully your ray to the point of death so try to choose one of the same species if possible.

So what would be frightening or stressing him? His tankmates are a 4-5inch silver arowana, 2 african clawed frogs, a few cardinal tetras(getting fewer by the day), and a tire track eel, in a 75 gallon(upgrading soon no worries) with a sand bottom, a few fake plants and 1 rock formation for the eel to hide under, he comes out at night and swims all over... what do you think is wrong?

I wouldn't be surprised if its the frogs, bearing in mind they have claws and your ray doesn't have any armour so not the greatest of mixes.

Plus once your arowana can he'll probable eat the frogs either way so they should be moved out. Eels aren't normally agresive towards rays so that should be ok.

Give it a go at removing the frogs.

How long should it take, say if it was the frogs, for the stingray to get back to normal?

My two little Retics are definately less active than the larger Motoro. My little male becomes more active in the evening at Dinner time.
Mine are not influnced by the bigger ray though so that has nothing to do with it. They all topple on eachother, but the large motoro is the dominant.

What is the temp?
The warmer the temp, the more active they are too.
What are you feeding him and how much. Being little, they need more food a couple times a day cause they need to grow at a rapid rate. A healthy little ray should have a "JLO" butt that bumps up at the tail, with no hips showing.
Just my ten cents
:*

Temp is between 81-83 degrees, fed 2 times daily, once morning one evening and if hes really active in the day and looks hungry ill put alitte in. Feeding live black worms and they eat em right up.

The suggestion with the frogs seemed to be the problem, thanks a bunch, hes much more active now... amazing how such a lazy doesnt move much frog could have been stressin the ray, if anything i thought it would bug the arowana cuz he looks at em like there lunch but they were way to big for him haha....

thanks a lot everyone

a frog with rays thats a bit of a funny idear

you need the bigger tank set up like yesterday the aro will be growing at around 1-2inch per month and in a 75gal tank with rocks and plastic plants the ray cant have much space to swim around

take out the frog the plastic plants and the rocks

give the eel a bit of pipe to hide in

rays 5 inches, 75 gallon is 48X18, nope no room to swim...most plastic plants are against the backwall, and ONE rock formation for the eel, i think hes fine. And if you read the posts, frogs already were taken out, and hows it a funny idea, i tried mixing two oddballs, didnt work, but im yet to see the humor.

may be if you did your resurch 1st you would have know that rays and frogs dont mix

if you have rocks built up in your tank it wont be long before they come crashing down damaging your ray or trapping your eel a happy ray will move rocks and bogwood around a tank all day long

Richard is right, an active ray will quite happily redecorate your tank, they love playing with objects in there so it needs to be kept ray proof.

rock aint going no where, frogs and rays dont mix and should of did my research? didnt find nothing about that and how often in the wild do you see AFRICAN clawed frogs and SOUTH AMERICAN stingrays?

you have answered you own ? they need totally different types of water as they come from totally different parts of the world

what makes you so sure the rocks wont get moved ? unless the rocks are silaconed in place they will get moved

a 75g is way to small for any kind of ray and it will need a new tank in 6 months

dont ask for advice if you dont want to listern when its given

In 6months when the ray needs a new tank he'll get one, god forbid i dont just shutdown my 75gallon which fits him just fine for now and rush out and buy a bigger tank. I think the rocks wont get moved because the rays been in there over a month and hasnt moved them yet, not to mention there halfway under the sand.

And as far as asking for advice and not listening? ARE YOU RETARDED? he told me to take out the frogs, so I LISTENED and took them out, that solved the problem, topic should of ended there, but no... people continued posting after the solution had already been figured out and delt with, as for you dregging up contreversy and reviving a dead topic... thats cool.(oh and p.s. i see a lot of people put Arowanas from ASIA with stingrays from SOUTH AMERICA, but you probably laugh at that too because they need different water and dont mix right?)
