Starving Long-Fin Black Tetra

Oh, well otos need a group of six or more as well. These are peaceful fish, but they are only ideal for a very mature tank as they can be sensitive and they don't always take prepared foods. I'd return this one as well.
 
Some fish tolerate ammonia better or don't show symptoms in the same way. Definitely check your stats with a liquid test. Small amounts of ammonia over a long period can cause nearly irreparable damage.

From the picture i see nothing wrong with your tetra, if its been like that for days then it sounds like its eating something, and we always try to help all the fish in the tank even if you dont want to hear it sorry

It didn't always look like this. It used to look like a normal tetra, bat I've watched it and it's not eating.

What have you been feeding and how much?
 
I wonder if you're overfeeding that maybe it eats leftovers when you're not watching, or perhaps it doesn't like the current food you're using.

Good idea, I think I have a small packet of other fish food. If this is the cause, then It will join my cat in the top picky eaters contest.

News flash: California is indeed shrinking, but it's fins have always been that dark. The others fins have just gotten lighter.

I tried the other food and it DID eat some, but not much. maybe it is starting to eat, but cant eat much because of it not eating for nearly a week. When i came home, i think i saw holes in its fins. not sure if this will get worse, but I'll tell you if it gets better or worse.

I'm glad it's eating! Holes in the fins..I think that may be a sign of fin rot but not sure :C

OP needs to cycle his/her aquarium properly which is a process that can take between 2 and 4 months if you are using the 'pure ammonia' method or around 2 months if 'seeding' a new aquarium with established filtration media from an 1-2 year established pond/aquarium.
 
It is likely that the tetra had the ailments mentioned due to either ammonia or nitrite poisoning.

I thought it usually takes roughly a month to cycle with ammonia, and maybe about 2 weeks or no time when you use previously cycled media. Forgive me if im wrong but this is what i remember learning.

Sorry for your loss, I have only just read your thread. From the description it sound like she probably had an internal parasite with her wasting away like that, most likely from the shop. Keep a close eye on your other fish, if any start to get thin treat them with an anti internal parasite medication.
