Starting Where Someone Left Off....

I have been looking around in the lfs and am quite taken by a selection of puffers they have, however this would significantly limit my other stocking i guess.

anyone got any reccomendations for a 'main fish'?

cheers

Yep mate ..most puffers grow massive, those that dont, valentini, sharp nose, hawaiian spotted, etc will rule out your corals then...
How about a dwarf angel or a small tang like a gold rim...too many out there to choose from,lol...

hi

you have done a great job of the tank do you know what fish you are going to put in it

regards scott

true, I think the best thing is to get some snails etc in it first, it has 5 hermits at the mo. I think what i'll have to do is to have a few looks at my lfs's and see what i like, I have been in a few times already!

To be truthful im not really keen on spending a fortune on corals- they look good but dont have the appeal to make me spend £££, if im going to get into corals at all it will probably be through buying frags of ppl.

Good option..apart from 4 or 5 in my tank everything in it was a frag..either bought online or off local keepers. A lot cheaper and allowing you to add to your collection a lot quicker, also a lot more satisfying to watch grow and safe in the knowledge they weren't ripped from a reef somewhere in the ocean.

I have now added a decent skimmer to the set up, a v400 or something. when looking at the pics does it look like its running ok-ish?

Here are a few photos of the tank as of this evening:

i have also added a blue back ground.

I have just plumbed the skimmer in to check it works ok, hence the mess- only cost £30!!

now the Q...

The tank still has the original filter box that came with it (its a rio tank), should i take this out and only use the seio powerhead? I would then hide the powerhead, skimmer inlet and skimmer powerhead behind the big rock, adding some more live rock to conceal them.

what do you think?

Juwel filter boxes come off easy , being held by 4 blobs of silicone on 2 sides..however , with no sump give a nice area to conceal heater, powerhead,etc..
Will soon cover over with coralline algae or attach a few frags of star polyps, xenia, etc to grow over it and make it vanish...
Your skimmer will need some adjusting for a few days and may take up to a week to function perfectly and balance out..lower the bubble level in cup and allow concentrated proteins to be bubbled up into the catchment cup.

after a while of faffing around the skimmer is now looking like this...

certainly seems to be taking stuff out of the water! the bubbles at the top of the column are still 'white' and there is a semi aerosol effect going on...

i have now moved the filter and filter box and have moved some rock about, i will use some small/medium rock and milliput to hide the gubbing you can see.

a black LS urchin - he will strip all the coraline off your rocks, i would take him back

and some live rock, which has come with some life on it... could this be the dreaded aiptasia? yes indeed it is, time to get the soldering iron out

the bubbles in the skimmer should come about 1/3rd the way up the neck

the life on the rock a coule of posts up is an aptasia pest anenome, you need to kill it
