I am finally ready to start my tank over after a drawn-out and rather traumatic disaster involving a landlady and a house break-in. My two remaining fish have been existing in a hospital tank for about two months. It would have been less time than that, but I had pneumonia for about a month of that. I was ready to give up on fishkeeping all together, but now that I am reasonably healthy I feel more inspired to get this thing up and running again.

I am not completely new to fishkeeping, having had a community tank in some form or other for ten years. I also had a nice little pygmy puffer tank with some gorgeous and unusual plants. I would not keep puffers again, though. They don't seem suited to fish tank life, but I did love having them. They have such great personalities.

Despite having had fish for about ten years, I feel I will need a lot of advice. I am going to try to do things a little differently this time, and I really only know about keeping a tank the way I always have. This time I am using sand, I want to try to make my arrangements more thought-out, I want to have it more heavily planted if possible, and to keep slightly different fish. I would appreciate advice and critique very much.

So, here is my tank right now. I think it is looking great! It has been set-up for nearly 48 hours, and has only cleared up marginally. I seeded the tank sometime yesterday with my sponges from the other tank, and I am going to let that bacteria take hold for a while before I consider a water change to speed up the clearing-up process. I had black sand with my puffers, but I never had this murk problem. I really hope it doesn't last long.

did you wash the sand before you put it in? looks like a swamp! should clear up though with the filter running(if youve declorinated the water)

I washed it a lot! It took all day (with some distractions) and it was running very clear from the bucket. I can see the wires at the back now pretty easily, so I have hope it will clear up soon. It has been much slower than I expected.

I forgot to mention that someone suggested stocking with:

6 Bolivian rams (3 pairs)
12 rummynose tetras
12 marble hatchetfish
1 bristlenose

I have the bristlenose. He is about 8 years old and has raised many babies, so I am thinking of getting him a female again. I also have one emperor tetra, so need to rebuild that group. If those tetras go well with Bolivian rams, which I am struggling to find out but so far it looks like they would, then I think I will go with having three pairs of the rams, the bristlenose or perhaps two, and either one large group of the tetras, or a smaller group with one other type. The hatchetfish look nice, so maybe those, but if anyone has any other suggestions I would be open to hearing them.

Add some cotton wool or fine filter floss to your filter, will clear it over night.

Well things happened in life and I had a delay with my tank, but I just did a check of the water levels and they are looking good! Tuesday the ammonia was at 4 ppm, and today it was at 2! I unfortunately didn't get a chance to check the nitrites and nitrates until tonight, but they were at 5ppm and ~30ppm respectively. I had almost nothing as far as those went on Sunday or Monday, so that's pretty good.

The ammonia went from 4ppm to near (or at) 0ppm overnight! The nitrite has come down from probably off the scale to maybe 3 or 4ppm (it's difficult to tell), and the nitrate is quite low now, but I am not sure whether to take that reading as correct. I'm going to add ammonia again now and hope for the best!

I feel like the cycle has stalled for some reason, and I am getting a bit frustrated. I just lost my longest-lasting fish in the hospital tank, which isn't really helping with the frustration.

My ammonia is suddenly taking a long time to clear, after steady clearing to 0ppm or near for days on end. The nitrite is now slightly above 0ppm, maybe 0.1. I checked the nitrates and they are still between 10 and 15, so I don't think this is what has changed things. I think I was slightly overzealous with the ammonia last time, but it went to 4ppm rather than the 2ppm I was aiming for, so it isn't as if I really overdosed. I haven't added any untreated water, or cleared out the filters... I give a squeeze of the hospital tank sponge every few days, up to twice a week I would guess. I really want to move this fish before I have no more. It was hard to lose my bristle nose knowing that he never made it to the good tank again.

Despite my previous post, I am going to try to think seriously now about my future stock. I hope my cycle will be over soon and once it is I think I will need to stock completely, or at least close to it, so I need to have a list in order to prevent random impulse buying.

My bristle nose is sadly now out of the equation. :( So I need to decide on a new pleco. I love plecs and wouldn't want to go without. I have no idea which type to get, though.

I was thinking something like:

6 Bolivian rams (3 pairs, as suggested by another member - I really like this idea)
~12 Emperor tetras
~6 Sterbai corys
1 or 2 Plecos depending on the type

And... something else? I really don't know what. I loved my pentazona barbs but don't see them around here much. I also liked my orange finned danios. But I am just going to what I had before and I said I wanted to be different. So I'm not sure. The numbers were just kind of made up just now, so might need to be shuffled a bit. Feedback welcome!

ETA I will also have a herd of Malaysian trumpet snails to keep the sand turned and because we like snails here. I am also leaning further and further towards the barbs because I love them, and I have always wanted tigers, but these seem like a good compromise still since having tigers would limit everything else I could have so much.

We have added fish! There are now 9 Emperor tetras and 8 Pentazona barbs in the tank. I am saying it now because it will help me keep track of the days these things happen, but I don't have a picture yet because I don't want to put the lights on yet.

Um... Oops. I knew that Pentzona barbs were Asian, but I temporarily forgot while I was out yesterday. I guess I have to call this my mostly south American tank now. But that is okay because I love these fish. They are so relaxing to watch.

Good news! It has been over 24 hours since 16 fish went in, and the ammonia is zero! :D :- I have taken some pictures with my phone. My little one has hidden the camera batteries somewhere. As you can see, it... doesn't look very good. Haha. We weren't expecting the fish to go in quite when they did, so I haven't had a chance to think things through. I am getting more plants, including a ton of riccia and probably a sword or two. Maybe more, but I don't know what that will be. I don't know what the little plants are in the front (if they are even visible in the pictures). They are survivors from the previous incarnation of my tank, so must be pretty tough. We have some nice pieces of wood that can make interesting arches, and some good rocks. These are all from the tank before. I put all of them in because we don't have much cover yet. I have always wondered what the big slab of rock with the holes in it is. Can anyone tell me? Please feel free to make arrangement suggestions as they will be gratefully received, but do remember that this stuff was just dropped in!
