Starting My First Fishtank

Small question - how much do I need to put ammonia in the water? The ammonia has 9.5% ammonia solution in it.

Cheers

Click on the calculator, right at the top of the page, input the volume of your tank, and it'll work it out for you ;)

Cool! 8.16ml. Now next question is how to manage to get the .16ml? :p I was thinking filling 1 test tube with 5ml .. and another just before it. But if its 9ml is it a big problem? or if its 7.xx ?

Don't worry about the 0.16ml =)

And I would underdose and check the levels - I put in the amount the calculator said and totally over-did it. You can always add more but getting the level down means a water change.

Cool. Great. I'll start with 7ml or so then.

Need to do some reading on checking for ammonia etc. I have some time - the aquarium stand is coming on Thursday. In the mean time can I put the sponges [they arrived] in some warm water with a drop of ammonia so I start getting the bacteria then - not to waste time kind of.

OR I better not do anything and just wait?

Putting the sponges in a bucket with ammonia will do very little. They need to fast flow of being in a filter in order to get enough ammonia and oxygen to grow bacteria.

It won't do any harm but I just don't think there is much point.

Ok good! another question will having a filter with the air pump help or its really not needed?

Another question,

will having this neon tube: http://www.everytronics.co.uk/products/QTX-Light-Blacklight-box,-ultra-violet,-600mm,-20W-160.414.html above my aquarium, so over the hood will work? i am thinking to leave both of the glasses (as per photo above) open and then heat / light could flow in much easier. What's ur take on it? much safer than connecting the tube there no? and is it by force to have a UV blacklight? or any florescent tube is good?

Whilst waiting for the stand to arrive and I can start the cycle, I am doing some research on what these guppies are going to start eating.

Should I keep this plan:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AlPQOlWNes5hdFkzeHdUY2U0VnBWbTZSRXJqVUllUnc&hl=en&single=true&gid=0&output=html

Will something like this keep a good balance? Read also that I shouldn't give the adults a lot of beef heart keep it to once every fortnight. Same for the yolk. Will give more beef and yolk to fry. Obviously for the fry I would try to chop it smaller.

With regards to cucumber / lettuce / heart / worm I was thinking to slice them and freeze them. Then I let them thaw from the morning and feed in the night.

The egg yaw will be mixed with water and when it comes to fry with a bit more water. The pea will be removed from it's cover kind of.

Is that a good mixture?

PS: Should I get this MOSS ball to control algaeo? 2 will be enough? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AQUARIUM-MARIMO-MOSS-BALL-LIVE-FISH-FILTER-PLANT-/260671723392?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item3cb13ed780#ht_1572wt_1137

I'm only a beginner in terms of dealing with fish, so I'm not sure how exactly it affects a tank, but I've done a project or two dealing with UV light as a form of water purification. I'm thinking if you haven't already bought it, check to see that it won't end up killing any good bacteria in your tank, otherwise you'll have dead bacteria and dead fish, and nobody wants that.

Started the cycle on Saturday:

Ammonia - 5mpg
Nitrite - 0mpg

Sunday check:

Ammonia - 3mpg
Nitrite - 0.25mpg

Wuhu!!! I have life!
