Figured I'd start up a thread for my tank, so I can keep all my questions in one place LOL. So a little over two weeks ago I got a great deal on a second hand marine tank complete with cured LR and crushed coral, though looks more like crushed shells to me. So I've finally got it set up now and stats are- s.g. 1.024, temperature 26 degrees celsius, 0 ammonia, o nitrite, 5-10 nitrate and a pH of 8.1

The basic plan is to get the tank stable and redo the cycle with a shrimp from the supermarket just to make sure everythings good, and add a few more kg of LR in (theres 20kg as is, but I'm sure more won't hurt) then a few months down the track begin adding livestock. I'm going to start out as FOWLR but am interested in trying a hardy coral such as a hammer further down the track. The fish will be small colourful fish such as things like the royal gramma, the clownfish, pajama cardinal etc

The tank has an inbuilt sump in the back, and a wet dry filter. The water runs first through the wet dry where it trickles into the sump, then is pumped through the protein skimmer and back out into the tank. The pump in the sump runs about 1200l/ph and then theres a 200l/ph powerhead in the tank making turn over a little more then 21 x per hour. The tank itself is 76 cm (30") x 35 cm (14") x 60 cm (24") holds about 160l/42.5g and the sump at full capacity holds 27l/7.2g.

The lighting is a combination of flourescents and MH, with a 150w MH fixture and then a 20w bright white flourescent and a 20w actinic, so should be enough for some types of corals.

This is what I have so far, and apart from a few bits here and there there's virtually nothing on the rock, which is kinda disappointing but oh well, I know the tank was set up and running up until the minute I picked it up, so the rock should be live.

and if anyone could ID these two things I'd be very grateful.

The first is hair algae and the second are colonial hydroids. Some people kill them right off, but for the hair algae it will come back anyways (and is a helpful growing area for 'pods), and the hydroids aren't a problem in my experience.

Just so you know a 150 watt halide should support most, if not all, corals. You will not be very limited in this regard. Lighting is perhaps the most important aspect of a reef but at the same time the amount needed is often exaggerated.

Agreed with Lynden. Sounds like you're off to a good start :). Good luck aquascaping that tank. Gonna be a little tricky with it taller than it is wide. Consider getting some marine epoxy to assist you if needed

The tank was originally a full reef tank, so I know it can grow corals, but I'm more worried about my ability to care for them LOL.

Hmmm interesting, I've also been told the green stuff is bryposis and the brown stuff macroalgae? The green hair is just in one spot but the brown tubes are quickly colonising every available space on the liverock, I don't mind it if its okay, I'm just a tad worried LOL.

nanocubeking- yup my first marine tank, I've been researching for years though, and always giving up, I wouldn't even have started this one except for the fact I knew it had been working and it was the best deal and I did really want to try marine.

Some new things to identify LOL, whats the spongy yellow thing on the right? theres another one in the second pic above of the tubey things, and what are the strands of green?

And another pic of the tubey things, and the green stuff LOL

Been doing more reading and slowly getting together a vague stocking idea

For fish my only must have is 1 or 2 clowns, I'd prefer a pair but would settle for one, definitely occelaris clowns, more for the fact their captive bred then anything else, and either orange or the B&W's

Then for other possible fish, my Mum wants to be part of setting up the tank and have her own fish, she's happy just to choose from a selection I offer her, but she wants it to be black and white with spots LOL, she really likes the bangaii cardinals, so might just see if I can find one of those for her.

Then the list of other fish I like, is like a mile long but some of them are
yellow clown goby
royal gramma
blue damsel
gold damsel
yellow tailed blue damsel
blue green chromis
falco hawkfish
long nosed hawkfish
pajama cardinal
bicolour dottyback
magenta dottyback

Okay okay so i have no idea LOL, I know I only want 4/5 small fishes max so probably something like a pair of clowns, a fish for Mum, then two interesting fish, you know like a goby or blenny or just with brilliant colours.

Then for inverts I'm thinking
Snails (astreas, turbos, whatever's available that is safe for the tank)
Sea star (not until the tanks well matured, so in a years time maybe, but definitely in the plans)
Then I'd really like a sea urchin, but I really like coralline algae too LOL.

And can anyone recommend some good beginner corals? I'd definitely like a hammer coral, but apart from that... Also when do corals go in the tank? I'm figuring if fish go in in three months, then probably wait until the tanks at least 6 months old before adding corals?

Lynden, when you say colonial hydroids, do you eman something similiar to the fourth picture down here
http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevor-j...cnidarians.html

These things don't seem to have any tentacles, there just like empty tubes, though their obviously alive considering that their now popping up all over the place, there always in groups as well, never singular.

Hummm, there are other types of hydroid with only two very thin tentacles which may be what you have :)

Well have got my Q tank together now LOL, the whole thing is made up of scraps etc that were around but hey it'll work, the tanks an old mirabello 70, all the electronics on it are totally stuffed, but the hoods nice and heavy and the tank doesn't leak, its a 20g Tall, but think I'll only fill it halfway so just 10g, will make water changes easier. Then I've got a variety of filters to choose from will probably just depend on whats in the tank as to what filter goes in there, a few pieces of good old PVC pipe and a 100w heater, the filter media will just come out of the wet/dry in the main tank and be throw out after use.

Test results for today
s.g.1.022
Temperature 27 degrees celsius
Ammonia 0-0.25
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0-5
pH 7.9

I've got a pantyhose bundle of food in there to start the cycle, and as soon as I can get to the shops will add some shrimp as well to get the ammonia up to 4 or 5

Added a couple of "plants" not sure if they'll survive, but they were pretty cool LOL ones padina crassa, and the other is caulerpa filiforms.

During the 5 hours I was out, I've had a brown algae outbreak in the tank, so the whole thing looks totally yuk, ah well.

Also spent some time with Mum showing her fish at the LFS and she's decided she wants to get a pair of pajama cardinals, so how does this sound as a stock list?

a pair of occelaris clowns
a pair of pajama cardinals
Then one more fish either a magenta dottyback, a bicolour dottyback or a royal gramma, though I like the dottybacks better

Hows that sound for a fish list?

you actually might be able to add another fish or two in there but that list is fine. just make sure the dottyback goes in last. maybe consider a wrasse or goby

I'd be happy with 5 fish, if thats slightly understocked all the better as I've always preferred to keep a tank understocked rather then fully stocked, gives you that bit more leeway.

Results for today
s.g. 1.024
temp 26 degrees
pH 7.9
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5-10

I've added two cocktail shrimp to the tank to get it going, so let the cycle begin LOL.

Brown algae is getting worse, how long will it stay for?

Also found my first moving hitchhiker, some sort of snail...

Can anyone give me a list of corals that are beginner friendly and would be happy in my tank? The tank having 150w of MH, 20w actinic fluorescent, 20w bright white fluorescent. The tanks also 24"deep but because of the aquascaping, I can get them up to 8-10 inches below the lights, it would help to know what depth the coral does best at as well.

If I could get names and the depth then i can go do further research, my problem is that the coral sites, when they do give lighting recommendations just say moderate-high light, which doesn't help much. I know I definitely want a hammer, but I also liked the frogspawn and something called a candy cane?

Oooh forgot o add I've decided on a stock list
2 x occelaris clowns (captive bred)
2 x pajama cardinal
1 x royal dottyback
