Starting A Marine Aquarium In Few Months

of course!

i read the tread of the guy who built his own shark tank on cichlid-forums.com. I also talked to my lfs (which has a black tipped reef shark) and they say that in a tank that large, it pretty much runs itself and there really is no need for water changes or even skimming! I think i might look into keeping one of the smaller species of sharks though.

You ask many lfs this and you will get a similar answer... Oh and then when things start going wrong they will then giv you the all seeing answer to your problems by buying this new "wonderproduct" that will hep you etc... and so the things continue to add up until your system that "runs its" is actually being ran by alot of very expensive bits of kit and chemicals.

If you really want to know about keeping such creatures then ask your local public aquarium, they are far more knowledgable at dealing with exotic sharks etc than a hobbiests shop. Im sure if you asked your local public aquarium they would tell you straight that their systems are heavily monitored and skimmed etc.

I have 2 large public aquariums near me.. BLe Reef aquarium and the National Marine Aquarium, both use natural seawater but its heavily refined and skimmed etc. The flow across these tanks is huge and the running costs are astronomical.. THey most definately arent tanks that will take care of themselves.

Here is a quote from their webpage regarding their Largest tropical marine tank.

The new Mediterranean exhibit features the deepest tank in Europe. A dizzying 10.5 metres deep, the tank holds 2.5 million litres of warm seawater.

Our annual total food bill is £20,000

well thank you very very very much, for all those pictures and your help I really appreciate it tell me more as I can read on what you are saying thanks heaps.

Shouldn't everyone be helping aquamanA instead of Matty? He started the topic and Matty stole the thread. I'm not being rude, but it seems kind of wrong.

yup I see that thsoe tanks would cost like a 100 thousand dollers to make and frame jeez I wonder how long it will take to clean it out :/
