I got quite bored today (too much extra time on my hands! XD) and decided to rummage about in the attic for something interesting. To my surprise, I found a 30 gallon tank! I don't really know how long or how it got up there (probably one of my dad's old ones that he didn't mention to me) so I decided to use it. This time, I tried doing a rescue tank. Since it's already the dry season here in my country, I might find some fish in some of the fast-drying lakes near our house. Lol and did I find one!

I think he/she may be a gourami of some sorts. Hope I find more fishies!

Wow, what a gorgeous fish!! Thing is you could be spending all your time now saving fishes you'll need more tanks. :D how regarding though!

What would happen to the fish if you left it? Do they die when the lake dries out? If the lake dries every year and all the fish die then how do they get into the lake? I assume the adults die but the eggs are preserved in mud or something?

If you found the tank in your attic today, does it have a cycled filter?

Lol thanks! True, I'll need more tanks. I have a 35 gallon tank right now that's not being used. After I cycle it, it rescue time!

Well the lake here is more like a stagnant swamp then a crystal-clear lake since it gets most of its water by the surrounding, natural lakes nearby when it rains and floods. That's why only the hardy fish (gouramis, tilapia cichlids, "janitor fish" plecos, some eels, etc) survive out here. If I had left him, he'd either die from suffocation and/or get picked off by birds just like some of his dead friends that I had found. So far, I only know one way as to how the lake gets re-populated after extreme drought. During the very, very rainy seasons, the ever-abundant and natural rivers surrounding us (yes, we have hundreds of deep rivers and lakes since I live in a rural area) overflows and floods some of the swampy lakes and "transfers" some of the fish.

At the moment, I'm doing one of those cycles wherein you use a "starter" fish to get things going. This guy is pretty much the starter fish. I'm pretty sure these guys can live it our since they practically lived in septic water. They can live for a month in a basin.

Awesome :) Post a picture of the swamp where you found him if you can, would be really interested to see what it's like. Good luck!

Thanks! Hehe maybe one day, you'll find some treasure when you're bored. :D

Yes I second the photos of the lake etc, really interesting stuff, and all the i shies you end up rescuing :)

Lol, FISHIES, not I shies!!!

Well, here's the lake/swamp pic. It rained a little so there's a bit of water now. There's still a lot of dry parts though. Sorry for the bad quality. I couldn't get close enough since I was wearing sneakers instead of boots. I'll get better ones tomorrow. ;)

I rescued an eel today. It's kinda hard to get a pic of him since he burrows into the substrate when he gets startled. I have to go ninja-stealth-style to get a pic of him. Hopefully I can get a chance to picture him and post it.

Finally got him!

Bad quality cause I couldn't focus the camera. The guy's movements were quick!

Nah, he's not that long. Probably half of my arm. He's in a separate tank since he gives a pretty nasty bite. When I first found him, he nipped my finger a bit!

I have no idea what it is. At first I thought it was some sort of tilapia, but now I'm not so sure. I put him in my third rescue tank (wow right?

) since he is very aggressive. :p Strangely, the water clouded up after a few minutes of him being in the tank.
