Spray Bar

Sorry for my complete new-ness, I have a year and a bit before I move into my new place and I want to plan my tank so it all goes smoothly - so now doing research for a year

Am looking at an External Filters (Canisters or HOB) but what are spray bars ? - From the name I can guess but just wanted a little more info on whether they are useful / what they are good for etc

pretty self explanitory...but they are a bar that sits on the top of the tank, ofter just above the water surface. it sprays water back into the tank from the external filter.

using one of these would increase surface agitation greatly so that oxygen can diffuse into the water more efficiently

Also, because it increases oxygen content, they are not good for planted tanks.

Spray bars are fine for planted tanks; they're used to cut down the flow of a powerful filter. They only increase oxygenation if the flow is turned upward to break the surface.
