plz excuse the noobie question. But i know nothing about sponge filters but just heard it was good for my betta cause it was quiet and doesnt agitate the water too much. What exactly is a sponge filter? and how does it work? and what do u need to buy?
Thx

I think what you mean is a typical Aqua Clear filter? They come with all the pieces you need but it depends on your tank size. Basically the water gets sucked into the filter and passes over a sponge and a charcoal bag and is put back into the tank. Betta's dont need too much filtration but these are the filters i use. For more info try searching a search engine of choice for "aquaclear filters"

caterpillar5 probably means "sponge filter" by judging from his description.

Usually, a sponge filter consists of a sponge :D , a hole drilled into it, and a pipe sticking out of the hole. An air stone, attached to a air tubing is inserted into the pipe. When air rises, it creates the water flow upwards, hence creates water flow from outside into the sponge.

Sponge filters aren't great for mechanical filtering but does a good job for biological filtering. Most of my grow-up tanks have both Aqua Clears and a sponge filter.
