got this filter

with this pump

does the air going up the center tube from the air line cause a suction through the sponges??

also there is a u bend at the top to allow the water to go over the surface can i remove this to get less of a current?

That's exactly what it does, and the stronger the air pump, the more water gets pulled through - it's amazing how much one of these with an oversized air pump can do for particulate filtration.

The one right in the center, with the odd looking bend, is a prefilter that can add sponge filtration to any kind of HOB filter that has an intake tube in the tank.
