A couple weeks ago I noticed that my boy Hawaii's tail was split down the middle and like half the size it used to be. I thought, "Oh crud, fin rot," even though I do big water changes every week... so I added a little Melafix and the split closed up even though his long beautiful tail was gone. :(

Then yesterday he was looking bored so I removed the paper I've got in between his tank and the guy who's next to him so they could flare a bit. I only had the thing down so they could see each other for like 20 minutes or so, and when I came back Hawaii's tail was split again and a bit bloody at the tips! Do you think this is from going too crazy when flaring? He's never had this problem before. Maybe because he's getting older (I've had him for a year but he was full grown when I got him)?

He probably got stressed out when he saw your other betta. Maybe he bit his tail, or it just split from all of the flaring.

I don't think he bit it, it doesn't look like that at all... I just find it weird that flaring for a short period of time just randomly started causing his tail to split. :/
