I am setting up a new tank - ok it's not going so well because I haven't cycled it enough but I was a lil impatient and wanted to start it off with some reasonably hardy fish just to see if it is OK.. the answer is, I am getting a 50% survivial rate.

Anyway, I wanted to clarify something. The lady at the fish shop told me to never pour the water in too fast so that it splashes because "this makes the water toxic and it kills the fish". That's the first time I ever heard of anything like that! I personally love to pour the water from my bucket into the tank in such a way so as to create a torrent and lots of bubbles and watch the fish play about in it. So have I been inadvertantly killing my fish all this time?

What a load of rubbish, never heard any thing quite so stupid in my life.

If anything it would aerate the water and help mix your neutraliser around, make it toxic? Ridiculous.

Yeah complete rubbish. The only possible problem could be pouring the water in so fast that you are really kicking up the substrate. If the substrate was very dirty this might cause a problem. Also some fish reallly dont like a lot of fast flowing water so that is something else to consider. A lot of fish do like it though :)

so why are your fish dying 50%?

could it be your tank is getting dirty with amonia and nitrite/nitrate? maybe too much food? who knows hehe. i'm sure your fish will eventually adapt to their enviroments and the water will settle just fine.

thanks guys, I was really confused when she gave me that 'advice'.

dthoffsett, I remember a while back LFS employee advised me (when I brought a new filter for my tank) that I should leave the filter to do its job and when I clean the gravel, don't suck out all the poo from it because bacteria loves to eat and breed in it.

funny times.. ^_^

You just stated why your fish were dying in the first sentence. Its because your tank isnt cycled, not the super deadly toxic flow of clean water.
