i was always told to keep it between 1.022- 1.024 but from what i have been reading this is to low. it should be 1.026????? this means for the last year my salinity has been way to low  should i gradually raise it to 1.026?? Right now it varies between 1.023 and 1.024.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If there are problems that you can identify as a result of salinity, then address it.

Remember that if you are using the standard plastic devices in the hobby and not a refractometer, then your margin of error is 10-20% either way. If you want to increase it, I suggest going slow, when you do water changes add a marginally stronger mix.

Where did you read that 22-24 was too low? That's an odd statement IMO unless you are Red Sea stocking. In the case of Red Sea stock I wouldn't have the SPG any lower than 1.025-1.027.

the best S.G would be 1.026 becauseb this is the average of the worlds oceans. If you don't intend to add anything else to the tank, then i would keep it at that. if you are still stocking then i would raise it to 1.026 slowly over a couple of days. also, i would try to avoide fluctuations.
