I need help identifying the lovely three little fish I just purchased. I just started a tank and asked the pet store owner what I should buy while I am trying to get my tank to cycle. She sold me the hardiest fish she knew of....(and by the way....three days later they are great!!!!)....however.....I forgot to ask what kind they were (how dumb I know).....I think they are a tetra of some kind but I am going to try and attach a photo to see if any of you can help me identify....I would love to do more research on them as far as finding out who an live with them etc.....I wasnt as crazy about them at the store but in two days the kids and I have decided they are just about the cutest things ever....they love to play in my air bubbles......

Anyway.....picture attached....hopefully....sorry about the poor quality...I dont know how to take aquarium pics.....or really how to use my digicam efficiently.....

Thanks,
Laura

Isn't that a neon rainbowfish? *scratches head*

Are you pretty sure about that? Nobody else that is reading is responding and I dont know if its because they agree with you or because I have some "strange" fish ha ha...

It's definitely a member of characin. The shape of the ventral fins and the body gives it away. From the first picture, it looks like the fish has adipose fin as well. But it doesn't look like any characin that I know of. Try posting in Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids Forum. They may know.

I replyed in the other topic
but you have Hyphessobrycon columbianus Columbian tetras

I second that Wolf, Hyphessobrycon columbianus - Columbian tetras. They do better in large shoals, I didnt think the ones I have seemed happy until I made the shoal up to 10, now they all seem very happy together.

OK....from all of my website postings I have it narrowed down to two types...

Either a Columbian tetra or a buenes Aieres (spelling wrong??).....

I will include another shot so that maybe those of you who are very knowledgeable can get a better look....thanks so much to all of you who have tried to help me.....

Laura

Definitely a Colombian Tetra as others have said.

Never really saw them as being hardy and suitable for cycling a tank.

I currently have 11 of them, they are great and even breed although most of the fry were eaten by some miracles one survived and is going great now.

Few pics of mine.
