Spaying A Cat

I've been talking to someone and they have told me that it is bad to (desex) your cat at a age younger than 6 months old.

1. Is this true?
2. If it is true what are the effects?

Grace, our female cat, was spayed at 10 weeks old by the rescue. She would've been spayed at 8 weeks but had to have another surgery at that point. No ill effects whatsoever.

after 6 months is ok...i don't know what happen with cat over 6 months.
