Hey,

I posted on here a little while ago that i was planning to spawn the HM DT male that i bought recently. Anyway, it all went horribly wrong. Everything went according to plan when i let the female out of her little container yesterday afternoon. There was the usual chasing and flaring but nothing unusual.

But i went out for about an hour in the evening to take my puppies out and when i came back and checked on the pair the female had killed the male :-(

No idea why.. They were both conditioned and the female was one which i have spawned before with no problems.. :/

It's hard when you place the two betta fish togetther in the tank. Aggression is always lurking just below the surface. Most times you will be lucky enough to breed them before anything happens.
I too am sorry for your loss

Am so sorry to hear this Jess :-(

He was a new male, maybe he had a heart condition and it only showed up when he went through the excitement of spawning :dunno: or maybe she did decide she didn't like him and attacked him.

I hope you have a more happy spawning outcome soon

Yikes, so sorry for your loss! I suppose that's the risk everyone takes when they attempt spawning, it's always possible one might kill the other :/

Sorry to hear about that. Loosing a fish during an attempted spawn is a risk we all take.

I noticed reading this artilce here:

... that some breeders really just leave it to the fish, rather than micromanage the spawning. No chimney glass or anything, just put the fish in at the same time.

One of your fish died doing what it was in its nature to do. It had a full life.

It really was a shock as i've never had any problems with spawning any of my bettas before. Theres sometimes a small amount of nipping but never anything serious! And i wouldn't have epcted it from that female at all.. Maybe she did think something was wrong with the male, who knows :/

The male i got from my LFS, the female was from Bettaman :)

Have just heard from a friend of mine who just had the same thing happen to him today :-(

I was at his place on sunday and dropped off the female for him who had been conditioned by me but was surplus to my breeding program so passed her on to him. she was the most sweetest female I have had and wouldn't hurt a fly. His male looked absolutely in peak condition and no signs of ill health.

He put them together yesterday morning and they had been swimming round the tank together nice as you like. He'd built a bubblenest and my friend was hopeful they would spawn today. He checked on them a couple of times through the day and then on the last check his male was dead :-(

It has to be an unseen weakness in the fish as no marks on the male and I know the female was not nasty.

So sad :(

Thats very strange that it happened to your friend too Joby.

It must be some unseen weakness/illness as you suggested. I certainly couldn't see anything at all wrong with the male, he looked in very good condition and was very active etc. I know in other species the female will attack/kill the male if she doesn't think he's good enough or whatever, i guess maybe that could happen in fish too... :/

Its very odd though.. And the naughty little girl is swimming around very pleased with herself now..
