Sparkling Gourami Set Up

I currently have a 5 U.S. gallon tank, and people told me I can put a sparkling gourami inside it along with some shrimp. I was wondering if I could add some sort of other type of fish in the tank, and maybe just not put in any shrimp. Could I put in like 2 or 3 guppies along with my sparkling gourami?
And also, are sparkling gouramis easy to get, are they common at your LFS? or do you have to buy them off the internet?
