Spare Media Tray In Tetratec Ex700 - What To Put In It?

After reading some of the advice in the plants section ive taken the carbon out of my filter. My questions is what should I replace it with? I thought bio balls, would these be okay so high up the filter (its in the top section, just bellow the wool). Would ceramic rings/foam be better?

Do I HAVE to repalce it, or will the filter run perfectly happily with a gap/space in the buckets?

i have the black sponge) slim one that came with it) and some filter wool in mine,keeps the water crystal clear, i think there are plenty enough balls/noodles already in these filters,so i would do this.....do u have that sponge in yours?

Yep have both of those in there, my top bucket used to look like this:

Foam
Carbon
Wool


Now ive taken the carbon out and its left a gap - will it be okay to run it with this gap? And if I did fill it, what would be my best option?

would be perfectly ok to leave it, but i would go with wool
