oh yeah, im in the uk

They're quite rare, I think the spade gene is recessive so they're got rarer as they're been bred with viels, crowns etc.

I got a solid red male years ago at a lfs that was sold as a girl, but I didn't know they were rare or anything about breeding them (only my second betta) or I would have :/.

It's not that they are rare, nobody breeds them anymore. I'm 53 and started breeding Betta's when I was 12. Back then the only Betta's you could buy in the fish stores were veiltails and occasionally a combtail. I was in a Betta club in my late teens and the show standard was roundtail with classes for veil and spade. Spadetail genes would be a throw back or older type tail shape.

They aren't that rare. I've seen them at PetSmart labeled as veiltails.

If you want a nice breeding pair I'd suggest trying to find a local breeder or maybe buy one of Aquabid. You can't go wrong with most of those fish. To see if the fry will sell well post pictures on the forum and see what peoples reactions are. When multiple people ask me if I will be breeding the betta in my photo that's when I know the fry will sell well. :good:

The betta in my avatar was a betta from Aquabid.com. I got him from a breeder in Thailand. :)

This is the best way to get them

Plakat + Veil tail=Vt shortail or Spadetail or swordtail

Long tails are dominant and short tails are recessive. By breeding these two fish together you would only get veiltails.

Nope have you ever had spade tails? well that's what i do when i want spadetails since i was 12yrs old but i'm just saying what works for me at the same time everyone have different POV on the situation. Plus depends on the generation and genes.
