Hi,

I recently added a Royal Pleco to my tank and he has settled in nicely. The only thing i have noticed recently is that when the tank light goes out and the room is in complete darkness i start hearing this loud noise like something is scratching or digging. I have tried sitting thier and turning on the room light but it stops as soon as i move, i have even tried sitting thier with a torch for ages waiting to here it but again as soon as i put the torch on it stops. Does anyone have any idea where the noise could be coming from? I'm only assuming its the pleco as it has only started after i added him to my tank.

Thanks for any advice :D

It is the Panaque eating.

Assume you have wood in your tank? (if not you should)

Worse with harder woods like Mopani but as Panaque are wood eaters the scratching noise is him rasping wood.

Definitely the pleco just settling in and making himself at home, redesigning his living room so to speak.

Nothing to worry about unless he's digging up plants or de-stabilizing rocks.

Thanks for the replies!

I have some bogwood in the tank for him!

He does like to mess up all the plants and even seems to dig up the air stone tubing burries in the gravel!

Should he eventually stop the noises?

Thanks

Only if he stops eating

LOL!!!

They love wood. I would add a selection for it to chose from. :)

Give your Plec different types of wood.
Some are softer than others and he may prefer these.

Hard to say, he may just be rearranging things how he likes them.

Softer the wood the better, bog/drift wood is fine, mopani is harder on his teeth
