yes...absolutely no peeking. Had no reason to as there are no fish in this tank yet.

I thought maybe the theory behind the blackout was the fish get so hungry that they eat the bga!!! And with no fish, well there's nothing to eat it?!

Am tempted to try the Maracyn. Have you personally tried it? I can get some ebay, but i got put off cos of the article in PFK about buying antibiotics over the net.

Its very strange how it didnt have any effect at all, is there any algae on the surface of the water or is it mainly on the plants and substrate? and did you remove much before the blackout?

Sorry it didnt work out but it is a bit puzzling, hows the co2 going, and the main tank doing as regards the bga?

Hi Zig. Oh it's so depressing when things go wrong.

I have to admit I probably didn't clean as much off as I did with the 20 gallon, but its so hard cos all the plants I have have such tiny tiny leaves. Could that really have done it? Even so, there was probably way less in comparison to the 20 gallon.

I've just come home tonight and the 5 gallon is _coated_ in the stuff. I spent an hour last night cleaning the bga off. I had to remove every plantlet and am probably doing them more damage. The baby tears has pretty much died now. Glosso seems to be half OK...some browning quickly, others flourishing.

The Ivy thing is still going despite the 30 degrees temperature from the light (removed condensation tray to double check it did make a difference with keeping the heat out and it does.

Do you think the heat/light intensity is having a speeding up effect on the bga?

CO2 in 5 gallon is easy...over 30ppm. Think it was 45 ppm last night.

There is small amounts on surface, but mainly on the sand and plants...like a web. The bga is pearling like crazy and my tank is a mass of bubbles.

The 20 gallon is looking OK...there are just the tiny bits showing on the glass near the substrate, I'm removing this every day. I'm keeping the nitrates up.

Hiya Sam

Yep it sure is depressing when things dont work out, its a pity it didnt work on the second tank, i dont know why im just more curious than anything else.

I dont think cleaning every little bit off would have made that much difference, it would have helped but not that much i dont think.

I think agitating the surface with the spraybar may have helped but i didnt mention this to you, i forgot :*) what difference it would have made i dont know tbh.

Yes i would say the light intensity is not helping, maybe reduce the photoperiod until you decide what to do.

LOL ...... yep the co2 is working

Anyway looks like your going the hard drugs route and have your dealer sorted :D

Im sure that will work let us know how you get on.

Sam, if you're going to use Maracyn, the dosage is 1 tablet per day, per 10 US gallons for 5 consecutive days..

I have in the past used it to combat cyanobacteria........ with great results.

Good luck!

What dose tablets though? Mine are 400mg. I think most are 200mg.

Yep this one is for 200mg.

http://puffernet.tripod.com/maracyn.html

1 tablet per 10 US gallons for 5 days.

So...I have 5 US gallons. If yours are 400mg, then I need 1/4 of a tablet for 5 days. So 1.5 tablets should do me then?

I read in the article you gave me gf about half dosing if its for bga, but there seems to be a bit of a debate about this as to whether its enough. Problem is if you dont get it right first time the bga will become resistant. I have no fish to worry about at least.

//edit - cant type -still cant type

Been trying to read more about bga.

So far I've come up with:
* tends to start from the substrate
* stagnant water doesnt help
* like any other algae (altho bga isnt algae) its about trying to get a balance and getting your plants to outgrow the bga
* I've read that 3 day blackouts work...and I am proof of that...altho I'm getting traces returning, which is proof that yes, blackouts work, but in the long run you have to fix the source of the problem
* I've read that 3 day blackouts don't work and make it worse...I'm proof of that too! I'm still convinced the fish must have eaten it in the 20 gallon.
* antibiotics are a risk, because if you don't do it right it will come back and will build up a resistance to the antibiotics. Also I get the impression that you still need to solve the root of the problem, cos it will come back.

I have some things I'm going to do and monitor to see if things improve.

20 gallon
I'm going to keep vallis trimmed as it forms an area of still water where the bga did grow before. I think I shall probably gradually remove the vallis and replace with another fast growing plant.
I already clean the glass between glass and sand, but I'm going to try and do this more regularly than once a week to keep bga at bay.
CO2 isn't brilliant at mo as I'm using 1 nutrafin unit, but changing every 2-3 days. But fingers crossed I'll have the pressurised running by the end of the week.

5 gallon
Give the maracyn a go. Keep on top of changing CO2 to keep above 30ppm. I've also cut the light to 4 on, 4 off and 4on temporarily. The bga grows at an incredible rate in this tank. The temperature is at 28 degrees (purely from heat from tube) and I cant get it lower. And theres 4.8 wpg, but I cant find any references to bga flourishing more in high light and high heat.

Thats it for now. thanks for reading.

Didn't realise they came in 400mg tablets too gf.

The dosing I suggested is for the 200mg's.
