Sorry Got To Say It

I personally think that melafix is good for the odd little scratch or ripped fin or mild bacterial infection.

What I hate is when after someone asks what they should do to a fish that has a ripped fin or some sort of open wound the first thing some people say is to treat with this and that and goodness knows what and fill the tank up with chemicals.

melafix is second only to the good old fashioned water change for preventitive measures and mild injury ;)

I'd rather just as salt as a first measure, agreed it's not always good jumping on the meds wagon.....I've treated ich before only with salt and heat rises....no meds whatsoever!

Indeed, I also know someone on another forum that cured HITH (quite a serious condition I'm sure you'll agree) just by doing daily water changes.
Additionally I think it was Tolak that said somewhere that the Emergency section would have pretty slow traffic if everyone did their water changes every week without fail, and I agree.

Therefore if I spot anything weird in my tank then the first thing I do is a water change before I even think about meds.

agreed it's the first thing I do if anybody gets ill too.....give the substrate a good siphoning through too

Just had a quick look at my bottle and it only claims to promote healing, not to cure velvet etc. IME mildly promoting healing is all it does. It is a bit like the stuff you put on children's cuts and grazes.
So I don't particularly think it's crap, it just doesn't do anything other than what it says on the bottle. If people on fish forums occasionally seem to promote it as a cure-all, that's a different matter.
