I'm interested to read people's experiences of sororities. I already know to keep five or more, add them at the same time etc. I have a 45 litre tank sitting around (about 12 gallons), and a female in another tank. And I've always wanted to give it a try. But websites give tank sizes and numbers anywhere between "6-8 in a 10 gallon" to "5 in a 20 gallon". I know it's trial and error but I'd like to find an accepted average.

So really I'd just like to know the following from people who have actually have or have had a sorority:

1) what size tank do you have?
2) how many fish do you have in it?
3) does it work for you or would you change tank size/numbers if you could?

Edit: won't be adding any males.

Good question.
I'd like to know the answers too.
My Lfs has some lovely females in & I'm very tempted

i have 4 females (used to be 5) a male and 1 red dwarf gourami in my 65L. i would prefer the tank to have possibly an extra 10 or 20 litres or so, they say that a sorority shouldnt have less than 5 which is why i have so many, but i think it all depends on the fish themselves, some are more aggressive than others, while some are fairly relaxed like mine. if you are going to get females, or if you really want a male aswell, i would recommend getting them from a tank that has many other bettas in, at least then you will know that they get on with others, and if getting a male then try and get a fairly young one and get lots of dense vegetation

In a 10 gallon I have 3 females (Been together since 3 months), I would definitely add more females!

Thanks.

Anyone else? You can't all be keeping males.

Just got 4 little females from another member, while they continue to grow up they are staying in their own tank together, but I hope to put them into one of my 4ft tank with two exisitng females.

i have a 125l currently with 5 females + other fish. i have another 8 females arriving Tuesday which will be added.

Previously i've had 20 odd females in a 125l with BNs with no issues :)

Generally the more you have the less aggression

That's a lot of large tanks. I'm thinking of a 45 litre one, is that large enough for 5 or is that pushing it?

I have a 180L with 4 girls in (was 5 but lost one and 1 is currently in the hospital tank), ive had them for 5 months and will add somemore eventually. They are in with glowlight and kitty tetra, corys and 2 snails.
