Soppy Fool With My Apistogramma Cacatuoides

I hate to say it but I think the new addition is also male but this time an orange flash possible cross with a double red. Again, if you look at the dorsal fin (at the top) you can make out that the front prongs are elongated. The behaviour you're describing is actually territorial agression me thinks

If you compare the first pic of the first fish with the new addition you'll see the similarities re elongated dorsal fins as he/she matures it may become more apparent. How's big your tank? You will need 2/3 females for each male and clearly definned territories (minimum of two) in the tank coz they will fight to the death during spawning.

Good luck

Tank is 180lts and I'm going to be very pissed off
If its a male as I don't want to put 6 females in
Even if I can find them ffsssss

All the females in the tank look the same at LFS
And the males look bigger

I can't wait to get a pair or trio of these, they're stunning! Hope it all works out for you.

I've looked on Internet at females some seem to have that some don't
So I'm confused now, I carnt keep buying female that are male

This happened to me too. I bought 2 males and 4 females, only after losing a male, another of the females has begun to show some color and pattern on "her" tail. The dominent male is gone, so I can only assume that it's a male now. "Sigh"

Non dominate males will keep juvi or female colors until they can defend a territory. But you said the new one was yellow when you bought it. I've never seen of, read of or heard of a male assuming female breeding colors as part of being submissive. It's wrong to judge solely on the first three dorsal spines that really doesn't mean anything except in a few species.

There was 5 in the tank that looked like my male
The other 5 looked very yellow and was much smaller

I'm very confused now, how long before I no for
Sure what it is?

Today things have changed to the larger male
Chasing the other one away and trying to have
A little nip at it.....

If the new one was yellow when you bought it, its female.
As far as I can remember it looked yellow to me
And LFS said it was, we will have to see what pans out
I will try for a better photo over the next few day
With the DSLR canon...

Over the last 2 day ive observed this, the male has been chasing the so called female all round the tank the so called female just runs away
she keeps all her colour and is not showing signs of stress, but the male will if she come near try and nip her and ram her away

not the type of behaviour i would think the male would show some one he wants to rattle :hyper: and make baby's with

I'm thinking this was one of my bad moves

Not necessarily. A non receptive female is going to be bullied just as another male would be.
