 well i found out last night what would happen if the return pump stopped working for any reason seems we had an issue with power during the night and only a select few outlets seemed to be effected which is quite weird really anyhoo the second i woke up this morning i was sent into total panic when i listened and couldnt hear the water pouring into the sump. well that was officially the quickest i have ever gotten out of bed on such a cold morning expecting to find a complete disaster zone out there

opened the door...no water on the floor...good start...main tank looking emptier though...looks down at the sump...HOOOOORAY, 1mm from the top of the sump :hyper:

i now have quite clearly marked on the sump the absolute maximum level it should be filled to. im guessing theres not much room for error though :)

so, nearly a disaster but good luck was on my side this morning :)

may your luck continue, quick go buy a lottery ticket :)

Holy cow, that must have been a dont "shake the floor!" moment.

Sounds like a properly designed sump setup to me, congrats :D. You should be proud of doing it right the first time, it takes other people multiple tries :good:

thanks :) thats good to hear. im going to make one more alteration though to the sump as i want a little more filtration. at the moment i just have a DSB and then a spot partitioned for the returm pump.

im thinking of putting another partition that goes from the top of the tank and ends and inch or so from the bottom. then in the part i can put a large piece of sponge that the water has to go through before it gets to the return pump section. i dont know if that made sense at all lol i also want to add something under the inlet nozzle to catch stuff too. something like a fine fly screen or something maybe

anyhoo i am proud now :)

There is a sure fire easy way to ensure you don't flood the sump with the return off: only ever fill in the display tank. Once the display tank is at its rest level, any further water will drain to the sump. Once the sump is full you have the system properly filled.
