Undewrgravel filters are not a good idea for marine. The only way to keep them from becoming a nitrate trap is to perform diligent maintenance on the filter plates, preventing the tank and its occupants from settling.

Most of your filtration should be covered by Live Rock. This can be supplemented by a protein skimmer and other forms of filtration (such as a deep sand bed, macro algae etc.).
