Mine had several little funky white things on his gills after 2 major stress points he went through. The first was when he saw his reflection in the glass on the side of his tank and started attacking the bubbles coming out of the filter. After that, I put him on aquarisol which killed off several plants in his tank but I was freakin' too much to even care about them. I went off to the store to get him another filter to run off the airpump which didn't make as many bubbles. I turned the heat way up and threw in some Indian Almond leaves.
This last time, it as when I was setting up his new tank, moved the filter out and had to move him to another spot in the house. I tried to darken everything and put him right up on my desk here so he'd feel comforted. Well, he didn't. He flared and zoomed away until I moved him into his new tank. So---what I did was turn the heat way up, throw in some Indian Almond leaves, add in some more aquarium salt and hope for the best. The white things are gone and he looks great. This new tank is heavily planted so I wanted to wait it out a bit to see if I could get him calmed a bit. I've read so many places now that Ick is always present in the tank but when they get stressed, they are prone to get it. I didn't want to go medicine crazy and just go throwing things in at him. I wonder if he didn't get injured in some way in both instances and maybe it wasn't Ick at all. ?? Both times he was flying around at a pretty good clip so may have torn himself in some way. I'm just throwing that out to readers for comments besides replying to your post. I'm amazed at the sensitivities of these little creatures. I wonder if we have to allow for that alot...??
