People i need some help, just giving my hamsters a healthcheck and 1 appears to be off colour!!!

His one eye is shut and looks a little sore!!! i removed him from his cage and bathed his eye thinking that he may have dust in it. But he also feels hot, every time i put him back in the cage he goes under all the bedding and stays there!!!!

Just wondered if someone out there could give me some advice?

i know NOTHING about hamsters....but my best guess of what it sounds like, is that maybe he got a cut or something, that may have gotten infected. and i think infections can cause fevers. that MIGHT be what happened...but just a guess.

My vet told me the best way to rid infection from a rodent is baytril I dont know if you can buy this type of medicine where you are at. But it is worth looking into if you are going to keep hamsters.

I have hamster myself and what you need to do is let him eat some unsugared un-cinommoned (cinomon...mis-spelled) apple sause. He will find it filling and thirst quenching. Next put a VERY shallow bowl of crushed ice next to his bed to act as an air conditioner. Your cant have it deep because he might become to sick and his muscle give out and drowned. A top to a margerin container works well for a bowl.

So...

1) put some apple sause in his cage in margerin top.
2) Put some crushed ice in the bottom of that margerin container (cut off all of the sides except the last 1/2 of it
3) If you have strawberrys give him a 1/4 of one.
4) Make sure he has ice cold water (put some ice in his water bottle)
5) Keep the area where he is lots of circulating air. (NOT ON HIM THOUGH)
6) Keep it quite and cool.

I hope some of this helps you (ive studied hamster and many other animals becuase I want to be a pre-vet teacher for schools :*) so if you need some help for other animals please feel free to ask me.)

Hope he feels better  Sont worry he will feel :flex: soon

EDIT: Make sure youi keep replacing the ice so thier isnt any water. This will take quite a bit of time but he will appresiate it! The ice will melt about every 3 hours in a 68 degree home. It will melt faster in a warmer house. (every 1 1/2 hours in a 75 degree house)

Sorry but since I live in Australia and hamsters are illegal here, I don't have any special advice. But I did a search and came up with this page, it might be of help: Hamster Ailments: Running Eyes

I hope your hammy gets better soon. Keep us posted! ;)

off topic but may i ask why hamster's are illegal in austrailia? i'm guessing it has something to do with introducing a forgeign creature ????

I guess so, Mr Bones. Our government is paranoid about that kind of stuff because of the impact that the cane toad had when they were introduced. :S

Here in Queensland, we aren't allowed frogs, rabbits, ferrets or turtles. :-(

Hey thanks guys for all the helpful info!!!!! he seems to be doing alot better and i manage to get some baytril that i had left over from when i went to the vets before, so i gave him some each day for four days running and is doing much better.........he comes out on his accord to eat and drink and he is very tame little boy :D i see if i can get a pic of him later when he is up

Souds like conjunctivitus (cant spell) , my rabbits and gerbils used to get it, it makes their eyes sore as well and also weepy, i used to bathe it twice a day with saline or warm water with a soft cotton ball. The best thing is to take it to the vet they will give you a diaognosis.Hope your hamster gets better soon :p

Baytril always does the trick for me. All the advice that you got seemed to be great advice also. Anyways I am glad that it is doing much better for you.........    :)
