Hi
When i looked in my tank this morning my Angelfish and my female betta are both extremely fat. they were fine last night does anyone have any idea what could cause this????

When looking at the fish from above, do the scales stick out like a pinecone?

More information needed please: tank size, what else is in it, how long has it been set up. I know what you're doing I presume it's cycled. Ammonia/nitrite/nitrate would be extremely helpful.

What are you feeding, how much and how often? Has anything new (decor/plants/fish) been added to the tank recently?

Both female bettas and female angels are prone to becoming eggbound, but this does not happen overnight. For overnight swelling, I presume you mean abdominal, sounds like dropsy, which is usually bacterial. Are they having difficulty swimming ie could it be swim bladder?

Any chance of a photo?

EDIT: Pleccy's got the right idea - pineconing is dropsy. Any sign of it?

Their scales are not sticking out. the tank is 90litres, been set up for bout 5 months. nothing new been added. water stats are all fine. feed nufrin flake food every other day(occasionally live food). we have got some neons, silver tips, bleeding hearts and bottom feeders in there as well. the female is swimming fine but the angle seems to be struggling a bit

Will try and get you a pic

okay this could be anything. Dropsy usually starts as slight bloating and then very rapidly becomes extremely large and the scales all stick out, this is basically a bacterial discharge inside the fish, the organs all fail (sometimes they even break up) and the fish dies. If you catch it early and treat with antibiotics the fish may recover. Sometimes it never develops beyond the light bloating but the fish looks uncomfortable and refuses food. I have cured this far less serious version with warm, clean water and time.

Sometimes constipation can be caused by overfeeding or feeding food with little or no fibre - doesn't sound like this is the case here. Bettas are especially prone to it. Try feeding the affected fish a frozen pea - dip it in boiling water, remove the shell and mush it up slightly between your fingers and try to get them to eat it. This often shifts the blockage if that's what the problem is. Constipation can occasionally lead to difficulty swimming as the blocked bowels press on the swim bladder.

I dont know if i will be able to give my angel the pea as he wont come out when i go over there like he used to. but i will try

The lumps seem to have a pinkish tinge to them, I'll look into it.

It's possibly bloat, try putting the fish into a net and keep them in the tank, then offer the pea right in front of their noses.
