Wuv, I'm putting ALL my faith into the fact that you know what you're talking about ;) , so tonight at all my water changes, everyone's heaters got yanked except the 2 big tanks - they're in the same room as the A/C and it's pretty much blowing right on them.

I'll let ya know how everyone fares!

I think I missed something- why are you removing all your heaters? :) Thanks

hee hee, I've known my fair share of topless folks in my day. The AC blows right on them, huh? Have you tested to see exactly how cool the water gets there? I would set up an empty tank as a tester for a day or so

gotta love boston weather...

this winter i had to have 2 heaters in my 2.5 gal tanks to keep the temps in the low-mid 70's, they are now heater-less and resting at about 80 F!!!!!

you could do topless and heaterless some days here!!!!

Oopsy - I should have made myself clearer than complete mud, sorry...
The tanks that have the a/c blowing on them are the 2 tanks that still have heaters in them.

Everyone else w/out heaters now are in completely different rooms than the a/c.

The reason I took the heaters out is cuz wuv told me to. lol

Actually - i have had lots of issues with lots of my fish. I'm trying to make them a little bit more tough-skinned, I guess, in that they can go thru some minor temp fluctuations. We'll see how it goes.

Besides, it's now 90+ degrees here today with full blown humidity and they're all at 80 degrees or so anyway. It only cools off a bit at nights, so the heater just isn't really necessary. AND, for the same reason tops just aren't necessary around here either. It's just much appreciated round these parts, especially since I live in Wisconsin, where we LOVE to eat brats, cheese and consume LOTS of beer. lol

Gotta love this crazy WI weather huh? :)

I remembered reading one of Wuv's posts about heaters several weeks ago and I took the one out of Hunter's tank. I am also letting Vince go heaterless. The only betta that has a heater now is Batista in my bedroom. Hubby likes it cool in there and keeps the a/c going. So far Hunter has done fine. I keep a thermometer in his tank and it stays around 75 without the heater. I am also getting all the gravel out of my bettas tanks. I think it's too rough and causing ragged fins. And before you think I'm going bottomless, -_- I've gone to smooth stones and marbles. :D

bottomless....

my bettas (non but cleo cause she in a community tank) have no heaters! and no gravel but freckles has a filter cause he's messy! ( :p i have a 5 gallon filter in m 2.5G tank :p but i have that netto flow control thing on it that someone posted about here who ever it was im sorry i forgot it was just that i just remembered it :p)

tried the heater-less method on my CT for a couple weeks and he was just fine....HOWEVER, after reintroducing his heater in the past couple weeks he has been bubblenesting daily ...w/o the heater he didn't make a single bubblenest, but to be honest, i like to sleep in the cold so the temp ranged from about 68-74 daily...

let me know if you experience the same type of thing

lucky you guys, i peeked at my one 2.5 gallon tank and it was off the charts and the highest temp it shows is 86F

but i guess i could just say he was at teh day spa for a few days

I think I probably will. I had Lucky here at the office with no heater - his tank stayed in the low to mid 70's. I took him home quite a few weeks ago and gave him a heater - he was at 78. Bubblenests the very next day.

My theory on bubblenests is probably contrary to what a lot of other people think though... I think they do it when something changes in their lives and takes away their boredom temporarily. Or... if they have new little luxury things in their tanks that they really like, such as a plant that's really soft - kind of like when it starts to get really cold outside, and you slap some flannel sheets on your bed - you know that feeling you get when you snuggle up in them the first time? I think that's what it's like for them. Or when you're taking a nice warm bath - same thing when they get a heater - it might be like a nice warm bath. Maybe the fact that they have a heater all the time prompts the bubblenesting all the time, too.

I do know for a fact that they nest when the weather changes. I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard, until I saw Six build his only 2 nests ever on the days that we had really weird thunderstorm weather going on here.

I'll let ya know how things go without them. :)

UPDATE:

Since the heaters got yanked, I have found 5 bubblenests.
And that's factoring in the whole PUR filter incident...
Maybe they're just so relieved not to be in toxic water anymore...

Lucky is VERY busy making one right now and I get death glares if I bother to go too close to it. He doesn't even move from his nose-up-in-the-air stance, he just points his eyeballs out the front of the tank at me as if to stay "Step off, woman".

I think our temps have been pretty steady right at 78 in here, tho - so we'll see how they all do when it cools down :)

:D I've gotten that same look myself from Batista. Vince could care less. I watched him one night for about 20 minutes and it was really cool.

Hannibal has no heater and he's just fine. Never been a great bubble nester TBH. I'm probably taking out Vespasians heater once I've set up the 3 I got today so my white guy has one. Its a rubbish one, but gives me peace of mind :)
