Whats does it mean when snails go to the surface of the water and make a creaking, scraping noise?

Edit: To answer my own question! They were infact feeding on the crusty algae.

Found teeth marks on the hood of the tank:

Still got a fair bit of munching to do!:

Another part of the hood where you put food in (but I never bother with that):

Case closed!

Your hearing things? :p

Nah, i dont really know. Maybe the creaking and squeaking noises are bubbles of air squishing in and out of his shell, like garden snails make that strange noise when you prod them and they retreat into their shells.
Maybe its at the top for oxygen, or maybe its laying eggs -_- . What type of snail is it?

Hey, definitely not hearing things. It was a tiger nerite that was doing it earlier. But I've heard my apple snail do it too. It's sooo loud!

Now my Ruby nerite has crawled out the water and is hanging from the hood of the tank. It's been there since I went to bed last night but it's still moving. There's alot of crusty soggy algae on that part of the hood so maybe it's eating it? Theres not much alage in the tank.
You know when snails eat? Well this is where the sound is coming from, except I can hear it eat as its out the water. Atleast I hope this is why. :look:
