It included wool, black sponge, noodles and carbon. but no "bio" media. does that mean there would be no place for the bacteria to settle?

Every link in your last post leads to either a biological media or a filter that starts with lots of biomedia.

Bio media is just a phrase, it's nothing scientific or anything. Just describes a particularly porus media. More porus = more surface area and also a better area for colonisation.

The noodles are likely to be where the largest proportion of bacteria will colonise.
