So I Inherited A Tank

How big is the dorsal fin of the "sucker mouth" catfish, when it's extended? I'm torn between a common plec and a gibicep at the mo.

It's a common pleco. That is NOT an upside down cat. It's a Type of African catfish yes some kind of Synodontis I think Synodontis eupterus too.

Hi and welcome :)
When you say you cleaned the tank thorough, what did you do exactly?

yup looks like a common plec and a synodontis eupterus =]

how big is you tank? and how big are teh fishies in there right now?

welcome by the way :)

Well firstly I meant thoroughly but I'm terrible with a keyboard

Scrubbed the inside of the tank to so you could see in it and let it settle
Fixed the lights
Bought a new rubber pump socket for the external filter as the pump wasn't housed correctly
Spent some money on an external canister filter
performed a gravel vac and 25% water change
Tested the water and found super high levels of ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate
Did part water changes every day for 3 days and added some Bacteria/filter start

Started all that last saturday and today the levels of ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate have fell to an acceptable level

I'd have done something earlier, but without digressing too much into teenage/household politics, if I had of before he said I've had enough he would just used me to clean the tank all the time.

It seems you did real good and the fish must be extremely relieved that you have them now! Glad all the ammonia/nitrites have fallen way down x

well done on the aquisition of the new tank.... i am sure you get alot of pleasure out of it...

and WOW...! what monster fish...!! :) :)

How are your ammonia and nitrite readings looking now? They really need to be zero - there are no acceptable levels other than that.

Glad the fishies have you and you seem to be really cracking on with the tank maintainence.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but that plec will probably need a new home soon. A full grown common plec needs a 5-6 foot tank, and that's assuming they stick at around the 1 foot mark.

The levels are not quite zero, but when I say acceptable I mean considering this time last week the tank was a swamp with a half working filter.

I didn't know that about the Plec as I'm only 6 days into my fish keeping career. Any help in where I could re-house said beast as a knew 5-6ft tank is a no no in this house.

if i'm honest if that pleco has been in the tank for 9 years its going to be stunted and won't grow full size anyway, so you could keep hold of it. but obviously they create alot of waste. i open the floor to peoples ideas..

Firstly please tell me if I'm being a pain in the #16##### with my questions, especially as I feel a bit pretentious with my a my new tank thread, but I could do with some more advice please.

Just when I thought I cracked the water levels the nitrite has spiked to 0.8mg/l over the weekend. I am doing a 33% water change everday and adding a double dose of Stress Zyme. Is there anything else I can do?

My ammonia levels read zero by the way and have done for 5 consecutive days

I have found a new home for the Common Plec and teh Silver Dollars aand I'm delivering them this morning so at least those three fish will escape the tank of death

Sounds like your filter / tank is in the second stage of cycling. Have a quick read of all the links here :

Particularly the fish in cycling topic.

This should help you understand a little better about what is happening to your tank at the moment.

Congratulations on rescuing those poor fish by the way.
