no tropical fish should be kept in coldwater.
look for fish that are classified as sub-tropical
that includes danios, some barbs and minnows
however cold water and sub-tropical are also very different
so not ideal to mix species.
additionally any fish that can fit inside a goldfishes mouth will be considered food.

as for the 4 gallon tank the only thing suitable is a single male betta
or an ADF or a few shrimps (with the addition of a heater).

would a goldfish considered danios as food.

I had danios in with my goldfish and found that 2 out of the 6 dissappeared, found one dried up behind the tank months later, never found the other.

why did that happen

Danios are active fish, if you dont cover the tank properly any fish can jump out- most of the time its because they try to catch an insect flying above the water surface and accidently end up jumping out the tank, or because they got spooked by somthing and jumped etc.
Small fish take a very short period of time to decompose in tank water, many fish will also eat their dead tank mates even if they are not predatory fish, so its likely that the other danio died, for whatever reasons, and either rotted away or got eaten up- or its still lying around somewhere outside the tank.

Wolf really sums the whole thing up if you look at his post :) .

oh right

Ive got a friend who had two goldfish with 6 minnows, all 6 died, 4 she never found but is fairly sure they were eaten, she has now come to the conclusion that goldfish are best with other goldfish nothing else and only if you have a big enough tank

here's the deal, sam. tropical fish are called that because they live at tropical temperatures.

* tropical temperatures are ~75F and above
* subtropical temperatures are ~67F to ~75F
* coldwater temperatures are ~67F and below

Hi samxx :)

What is the actual temperature of your goldfish tank? How big is your goldfish?

It might be possible to keep certain species of cory cats in there, but it would depend on how you answer these questions. :D

no matter weather it IS possible no one should be telling people that its OK, probably best to just say NO you cant keep cold and tropical fish together. with the temps both fish could survive in each others temped water BUT if you put cold water fish in tropicalwater the immune system will be at its lowest and vice versa.

they live in a 25 gallon UK

gold fish A
body 7 cm
body& tail 11 cm

gold fish B
body 10 cm
body & tail 14 cm

Hi samxx :)

Those goldfish aren't too big yet, but they will be growing. Have you given any thought to getting a weather loach? They are active and interesting and can take a wide range of temperatures. They can be kept alone or in a group. :D

i think that a couple of minnows will do fine with your golfish :D
and can i just say sam i have actually seen that white gorilla in your avatar her name is snowflake and she is in barcelona zoo, she is the only 1 in the world :D
