So.. A Checklist...

Something I have notied greatly lacking in alot of checklists from advice n web sites, books and even leaflets in stores is the equipment needed. For example:

one list leaves out complete obvious items, such as a tank (I know you usually would assume, but some people...)
Another didnt include an algae cleaner, or a fish net.
another didn't include food.

A fully comprehensive list of all equipment - from essential, to maybes, to if you are flash with cash would be great, and have been better if it had been available when I had started to embark on this. Then again, I could always start just such a list - but then, my knowledge is thin - the essentials to semi essentials is all I know, and even then probably still make flash with cash semi essentials half the time.

Ah, sorry for my rant on that one, it has just been a bit of a frustration.

So.. maybe i will can the idea of the ottos....

maybe replace them with an elage eating loach? is that correct? any suggestions..

and a few cory's for the bottom.. they are growing on me!!.. any suggestions for loach either.. Would a couple of clowns be a bit much for a rio 180 with the stock mentioned previously? if so which ones....?

As long you don't have a Chinese Algae Eater in mind
Or sometimes also known as a Sucking Loach, or Golden Sucking Loach, or just "Algae Eater" - they get very large and can get very territorial and aggressive.

Profile for Agae Eater.

Clowns get too large and don't eat algae. You could go for some Siamese Algae Eaters though

Profile - but make sure they are the "true" ones :)

You asked earlier about how to add the plants - I'd add enough water to the tank to allow them to stand upright, so you can see what they look like, but not fill it completely, so you're not padding about up to your armpits in water trying to plant them. If you add them after the tnak is cycled, then you could take out the 90% water then add plants, then replace the water.
Could you also describe how you set up your filter? I've set up a juwel Vision 260 and am really not sure that I've done it right! Thanks

annka5,

Will do.. i will get the info when i am at home and post it for you, or PM you with it.

oh.. and another thing.. the laterite stuff.. what does it look like.. i understood that you should stir up the sand now and then to stop the build up of gas pockets or ermm.. gunk.. when you do this does it not unsettle the laterite and make it look a mess, or do you only put it directly beneath the plants.?

This is what it looks like :)

If you top with sand, just lightly rake the top layer of sand, you don't have to go right down. But if you're going to have quite a few plants, you might not even need to do that. Especially not around the plants and the roots.

Thankyou once again.. my question answered ;)

at what point do people consider adding CO2.. is that if you want it heavily planted?

If you want thriving green lush plants, then yes I would say absolutely.
And in which case I recommend you swing by the planted section for more help :D

crikey.. when does the learning curve get a little less steep, my calves and knees are killing me...

Thanks BTW ;)

I know the feeling myself. In the middle of it too. Just been up to a fantastic store near here, got a rather large informative leaflet for free from them on plant life.

Also been rather successfull in obtaining 3 books from ebay, one on plant life in aquariums, freshwater and marine fish and one on Aquariums in general.
