Quick and hopefully simple question.

I saw a Snokeflake Pleco in the LFS yesterday but when researching on the net could not find a great deal of information. There is a Snowball Pleco but is this the same thing???

Also, what the "L" numbers after each Plec's name. Is this a numbering convention of each species?

have a look at teh pictures of L142 or LDA33 on www.planetcatfish.com's "Cat-e-log"

Then you can compare it to the fish you saw.

The L number system is a method of identifying Plecs that havent yet been scientifically described.
The numbering convention has stuck and now you tend to find that the L numbers stick (they are easier to remember if you ask me too :))

The system also does away with this exact problem - if it had its L number - you could easily check it - common names suck as each imported and shop will invent and use their own.
