I am getting a snail and I am woundering what it needs. Such as food, shelter, space ect. And if there is any other special things to take care of it. :alien:

It basically needs algae present in the tank, wich will be provided by waste produced by any tank inhabitants, light, food and pretty much anything. They just need to be in a tank with water (if it's supposed to be in water), it doesn't really need to be a specific size but it should really be about 1 Imperial Gallon. Just give it a few plants and places to hide.

You shouldn't just rely on the algae present in your tank to feed the snail. You should supplement his diet with algae wafters and vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, etc.). I have 2 apple snails and I add an algae wafer every other day. I also try to give them a chunk of cucumber or zucchini once a week. Also remember they are large waste producers, so you'll need to vacuum the gravel regularly. Mine really seemed to enjoy chomping on the driftwood in my tank. But they really have no requirements as far as decorations.

Hi,

What kind of snail are you considering? Apple snails need 2.5 gallons per snail if they are brigs. If they are cannas they need more like 5 gallons per snail they get huge. www.applesnail.net is a great site with information on lots of different snails.

Emma :)
