the tank that i want to set up as a shrimp tank is over run by them, ill feed a few to the loaches but how do i ensure i get rid of them, OR wont it matter? they are teeny at the moment but the filter i put in the tank about an hour ago is already covered in the monkeys

im about to rip it apart and clean it ( not filter obv) will this get them? there arent any plants in there at the moment and its been standing since 7th april, but they are still breeding

shelagh xxxxxx

Boil everything then sieve the substrate under water to ensure the smallest particles move freely and don't stick together.

without letting everything stand dry for atleast a week there is no sure way to get rid of them. however if you do that the filter bacteria will die.

i think a lot of shrimp will eat snails but you would need to check this.

Pop the filter in your main tank Shelagh to keep it running.

Strip the tank down, use boiling water and some bleach to clean everything out, the rinse and rinse and rinse some more, you know the drill. That should eradicate the little boogers. Oh remove the apple snails first :D

Will that infect the main tank?

Doubtful and if any she doesnt pull off before putting in her tank, the loaches will eat em :)

Loaches are like cruise missiles for snails. If your loaches are small then they putting them in the tank for a week should remove all the snails but there may still be eggs hidden in the substrate.

I have often wondered if a person could use copper in a tank to kill off snails? Of course remove any invertabrates you want to keep. Then do a water change, or more until the copper levels are not readable before putting shrimp and such back in the tank. Just a thot. Am I way off base here? Karen Campbell

Copper will kill all snails however they are often left to decompose in the tank leading to massive ammonia spikes, also the eggs aren't affected until hatched so will need to keep a copper treatment going for several weeks. The sopper is then hard to remove and you would need to use activated carbon in the filter for several more weeks. Ultimately its not worth it.

If you put the filter in another tank to keep it running, you may want to give it the once over before putting it in. I've had an infestation of the blighters in a filter before. I couldn't get rid of them. They were in the filter, kept removing them but they ultimately returned. Was a nightmare to get rid off.

Ive never actually bought any just have some that must have come in on plants. I dont mind the snails but they are a damn nuisance as they somehow get into the external filter and lay eggs there. Then the tiny snails live in there and occassionally clog up my spray bar holes!

i dont mind them as the clown loaches will love them, think i have shifted them all from the little tank now.. only to add apple snails :D spose time will tell

thanks all :)

i have never tried them but yea they are supposed to b great at getting rid of pest snails
