Hi guys,

Ive had my tank set up for a good few months now and had the odd snail pop up here and there. I remove them as I see them, however I have now started to notice lots and lots of tiny snails on the surface. I purchased anti-snail to stun them however, my stones are so fine that my hoover cannot get the snails without getting the stones. Do I pick the snails out by hand? Squash them to kill them? Or I have heard that a lettuce leaf attracts the snails?? I don't want my tank to over populate with snails so would you have any ideas. Also are there any fish I could buy that like to eat the snails?

Cheers guys, looking forward to your comments :good:

Hi Bugmania69

I was having a problem too. I bought 3 assassin snails at the weekend and they are slowly sorting the rest of the snails - they kinda pretty for snails too!

Hello :)

Pest snails, normally come in on plants!

First thing to do is reduce the amount of food you are feeding your fish.

I bought an Assasin snail which eat them, there are lots of empty shells in my tank now :)

Hope this helps.

Weigh down a piece of lettuce overnight , in the morning you should find some snails on it. :good:
If you want to add fish that eat snail then depending on your tank size and current fish buddies then loaches are one type of fish that will eat snails , although you should rersearch them fist as some of them get very large, chain loaches  are one of the smaller ones that like to be in a small shoal, also fit in well with a community aquarium.
Assassin snails may be worth looking at , although for what I understand (which is very little (lol)), they will eat a snail or two then sleep for ages so although they wont eliminate the problem they can help control it.
The other thing I was going to suggest was are you over feeding ?, I am guilty of this and this helps snails to thrive and population explosion, so some times prevention is the best course of action, good luck.... :good: :good:

cheers guys general concensus is too get the assasins in. i have heard of the lettuce way so may give that a try to appreciate it guys thanks very much will let you how it goes. :good:

Clown loachs do a mighty fine job of killing pest snails

but you need atleast 5-6 of them..

i had 2 witch did fine ( i tricked them.. witha mirror it sounds harsh... but yea.. it worked. :D )

Just decrease your feeding amount. Watch your fish feeding to ensure they have all fed. Any extra food will feed the snails. Without the excess food the snails can't live! One or two snails aren't too bad. I have left one which has grown quite large now :) He/She keeps my plants clean :)
