I cannot decide whether to remove the few snails I see in my newly planted aquarium of not. I believe they are the Malaysian snail type and seem very active in going up and down the broad-leaved plants. They don’t appear to damage the plants and I guessing they are feeding on either algae or something unseen on the leaves.

Should I get rid before more appear or keep them?
(I would like to think they are beneficial)

MTS are good IME. They keep the substrate fresh, eat algae and leftover food, no bother at all. I have loads now but they generally only show on an evening.

Dont MTS live mostly in the substrate? Do these snails have an elongated shell or are they more roundish. The more roundish shell types piggy back on the plants from the store and are an eyesore, can eat your plants and foul the water with their waste. If this is true then Boita genus loaches can take care of this pretty easy (I had about 50-60 pest snails in my 29 gal and after inroducing some Yo-Yo Loaches this weekend I'm down to about 5-10.

thanks for the replies.

Snails stay as I would like to see them clear the little bit of algae that is starting to show :S
