i was just looking in my tank and noticed a black baby snail.. at first we fort it was fish poo lol. but the i noticed it was moveing. and is to small to recognise what type of snail it is. but we dont have any over snails so dont no how it got there. but two days ago we bought some live plants and some balloon mollies so we dont no if it came with them or not.

is it ok if we put it in a breeding net ? cos its that small

and what do snails it eat ?

and will our neon tetra's, balloon mollies and guppies attack it ?

Thanks ;)

I have often found small snails in my tank after I have planted new plants. I understand the eggs arrive attached to the plants - and it's almost impossible to see them. These have the capacity of breeding very fast and may become a pest, so you may not want to keep certain varieties in your tank for that reason. If you have found one, you can probably expect to see more. I managed to find just a few, and removed them by hand before they bred any more.

I now soak my plants in a Seachem excel solution for about 20 minutes before i plant new plants - this apparently deals with any potential unwanted snails on the plants.

Since then, in order to control algae, I've bought some zebra Nerite snails - they don't breed in the tank environment and will not harm your plants. Quite facsinating creatures to watch, actually.

If you decide to get rid of your gate-crashers, I'd transfer your snails to a pond somewhere wher they will be happy.

thanks for the info :)

i checked that plant and i have just found another on my new plant, so i now kno what plant it is there comeing from. i think i am going to let them grow for a while to see how it turns out. hopefuly i will find out what kind of snail it is. do they just eat the algie and plants in my tank?

i think it is a Family Physidae snail. by the look of it

thanks

agreed, pest snails are only useful (IMO) as food for loaches or puffers.

I completely disagree as with other veteran members on here there is no such thing as a pest snail. It was probably a common pond snail which will eat some plants such as elodea but most are fine. they eat algae predominately so as long as you dont overfeed the fish you will have no issues.
