I have just taken 2 snails in the previous owner bought them as Apple snails from her LFS but she has recently been told they are a species of Trapdoor snails

what do you lot think they are?

The shell is a bit crumbled on one , any suggestions on that

look like apple snails to me (brigs) :) i would have thought trapdoor was just another name for them as they have a trap door

it looks to have pretty bad erosion so if possible keep the pH above 7 and add some liquid calcium.

Emma :)

They are just your typical apple snails... 'trapdoor', as was said, simply reffers to any snail that has a 'trap door' at the opening of its shell - apple snails are one of these. In other words, all apple snails are trapdoor snails (but not all trapdoor snails are apple snails :p).

the ph is sitting at 6  i am using liquid Calcium they are also in a tank on there own so is there anything else i could do.
They also had quite a big Crayfish of some sort in the tank so could it possibly be damage from the crayfish?

ph6 is not good for apple snails. They prefer ph values between 7 and 8. Anything lower will cause calcium in their shells to dissolve, ie. shell erosion. You can try adding crushed coral in your filter to buffer the ph. Have a look on Applesnail.net. You can find everything about applesnails there and also they have a very active dissussion section with lots of advices and pictures too.

Just a warning, most crayfish will make a meal of an apple snail if it puts its mind to it.

Hi..
Thats deffo a caramel stripped apple snail. There is a breed of trap door snail, this is more elongated like a pond snail and are always very dark brown/ black in colour.
And yes hes suffering from a bad case of calcium loss. The advice given above above is just right. Buffer your PH with cruched coral and try to get it at about 7 or above. Ive tried the liquid calcium myself but to be honest its not much use if your PH is low.
I would look at diet too, they need a good variety of foods and really, living on what scraps are available in yout tank wont be enough. Try adding cucumber they love that, and also Blood worm and shrimp pelets as these have a good source of calcium .

The snail in the first picture doesn't have any orange dots on its skin and the suture of the whorls of the shells are a bit indented and they whorls look a bit round (although the last two things might just be an optical illusion created by the corroded shell), so... if it's also eating live plants (but I can only see plastic ones in the pictures), it is Pomacea canaliculata and not Pomacea bridgesii. As suggested, you might want to go to applesnail.net and read about stuff in there, there's also species section with pictures and help to determine the species.

well they are now in one of my bigger tanks and the PH is between 7 and 8.The tank they are in has live and artifical plants in but they have not ate the plants at all.I do give them a varied diet apart from any leftover flakes they get pellets, cucumber they love celery.
They are in with my golden apple snails and they have perfect shells so i guess i must have it right in that tank as my glden are well grown and have been in there since they where tiny
