The lettuce thing is not something that gets rid of all the snails in one shot. Some nights you will get 4-5 others you will get 10-20 but it is an easy way to remove snails over time. The Pakistan loaches mentioned by lateral line are great snail eaters... good luck snail removal is often one of the most frustrating parts of the hobby.
