i'm wondering why my snails are all dying. i had several malaysian snails and some ponds snails in my tank, but a few days ago, they all started dying  . my fish all seem very healthy, with the water stats normal. i thought it might be the pH, but it registers as just below 7.0. i have 8 kuhli loaches, 5 peppered corydoras, 1 pearl gourami, 2 long fin rams, 12 cardinals and 14 harlequins.

i perform weekly 25-30% water changes, and am trying my best to not over-feed. there is a ton of algae though, as i am still waiting to be able to get the farlowella that i want. anyone have any thoughts?

thanks in advance!

Have you treated the tank with any copper containing med? Or added any new live plants? They are sometimes treated with a snail killer to destroy and snails or eggs in them.

my fertilizer (nutrafin plant grow) has some copper. i didn't realize it was toxic to snails! i won't be using it anymore, that's for sure!

The ammount of copper contained to dose with fertilisers is miniscule, so it should not cause your snails a problem.

Snails do have periodic die-offs, sometimes unexplained (my malaysian trumpets are all gone from one of my older tanks).

water testing is a great idea, also remembering oxygen consumption too, by both fish and snails.

hmmm... well whatever it was, it seems to be getting better, as i'm finding baby pond snails again. i guess there had been a few egg clusters around, cause the only other snails i've been seeing are empty shells.... my filter is getting covered in them again as well.
i won't use that fertilizer again, as i'm unsure if it was the culprit and will get more malaysians soon. hopefully this won't happen again!
