My 5ft tank and tropical 4ft tank both have an odd odour, the water stats are fine. But each time I lift the lid to feed the fish I get, what I can only discribe as a summer shower/earthy sort of smell. I can smell it in my 4ft coldwater tank too but not as much, probably because the water is not as warm.

The 5ft tank has no live plants (thanks to the fish) but the tropical has lots of plants and the coldwater just a couple.

Any ideas?

Thanks

 Oh! now I feel silly lol

Thanks for that, I just dont notice is so much in the smaller tanks, just the bigger ones.

It's normal.

I was too embarrassed to ask about this! :p But now I know too, so thank you :)

Yup, a good tank should smell like a garden (soil) smell.

yup...good tank water smells like dirt :)
well, a nice earthy smell anyway.
cheers

I really quite like that smell... reminds me of a summers day when a cloud bursts and rain meets the hot earth - lovely waft.

As with all the other replies, earthy soil smell is a good smell, i love opening my tank top and taking a good whiff, im not happy if the tank doesnt smell like that.

Does anyone actually know why the water smells like that after a while?
