Hey all, just having a random think, are there any very small catfish that arent corys?

Cheers :D

I'm tempted to get a shoal of them for my larger tank now... very tempted!

My only worry (for the small tank) is that the room it will be set in gets prety darn warm come summer time... and I notice the temperature range for the Harra sp. is rather low... (18-24)

They should be fine at higher temp short term.

There's also Otocinclus, beautiful little catfish that doesn't get too big.

oddly I just came across my very first "stone catfish" Hara sp. in a store today. So I had to get the last 2 they had, I think they should do fine in my paludarium. They are really tiny and cute .

I'm not sure the small tank would be big enough for a small shoal of ottos... although, i do have an odd tank upstairs thats 2ft x8 x8 which would look very cute as a 'mini' river setup...

There are also several species of Akysis catfish that stay quite small, but they aren't commonly imported/available. They look similar to Asian bumblebee catfish, and prefer cooler water.

Hi there :D

Thanks!

I have a very large asian bumblebee house on his own in a darkened aquarium (he is a right terror - bought as a baby mislabled as an african bumblebee). so I do like them, however like his larger counterpart, is he also likely to be territorial?

otoo's are not suited to smaller tanks unfortunately, its quite the opposite. they need large areas to graze or they become starved. so larger tanks provide more glass, plants, and decor to graze on. and the tank is often more stable with it parameters.

You need to be careful with ottos as they often die 1-2 days after being purchased due to exposure to ammonia at the LFS and under feeding.

What about pygmy or dwarf corries. stay very small, very active and are superb little characters...

if your going to keep ottos successfully long term, you NEED to have live plants. my shoal graze on them more than on the glass. Larger leaf plants like echinodurs and crypts are major favourites.

Only suggested Otos in response to smallest catfish that is not a Cory. If I'd realised it was for a small tank, then I wouldn't have suggested them.
As Nick16 has rightly said, they do need a good size tank, plenty of plants and good water quality.
