im looking for ideas for an active smallish catfish. i know the first thing that comes to mind are corys but after having them for years and breeding some rarer species im thinking of something that bit different. another that comes to mind are flagtail hoplos but they arent really that different......

so if anyone can suggest some active catfish that are a bit different from the norm then please do.

the cats will be kept with cardinal tetra so they cant be too big or predatory and as i said nothing that will just hide away all day.

pictus are great but not with cardinals so cant go down that route.

any suggestions?

how small are we talking ? hopolo size ? i always wanted some hara jerdoni in a little tank, at only about an inch they may be a bit small though  no idea of their behaviour either. i also have a paynes catfish, about 2-3 inches long, but i rarely see him. this could be because hes on his own though, i dont know. requires slightly cooler trop temps, 22-24. look nice though.

nothing too small. not smaller than a cory really. i have 2 x FX5's on the tank so dont want them sucked up

the tank will contain angelfish and loads of tetras an L200 and bulldog plecs. it just needs finishing off with some cats.

nothing really bigger than 5-6 inch max due to the cardinal tetras. i dont want them being eaten!

not a big fan of synos tbh

School of upside down cats? or if thats to common maybe some Synodontis schoutedeni
If not synos then maybe some Agamyxis pectinifrons, if not then how about Pterobunocephalus depressus?

hmmmm, i would've said corydoras hastatus but you already have corys.... these definitely dont hide away and are very active... i think they only get to about 1 inch or so.....

How could you not love these guys?

How about a group of social Synodontis flavitaeniata or slightly more boisterous brichardi? Both will love the conditions you should be providing for your Chaetostoma, heavily surface rippling water and plenty of current lower down too.

just off loaded a group of doras and tbh they get too big for what im after. banjo cats are a great choice which has been thought of but dont they hide/burry themselves in the substrate during the day?
